Instructional Evaluation - Discussion List
There are many different ways to import documents into Kurzweil.
To create your own documents, choose New and type your text.
You can also enter text into documents or notes with the Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition program. Use the Open dialogue box to import files from your hard drive or storage devices, such as floppy disks or CDs.
According to the Files of Type drop down list, the following types of files are supported:
• KESI format files
• Rich Text Format (RTF)
• Text files
• MS Word files
• TIF (media files)
• Adobe Acrobat PDF files
• Bookshare files of this type
The Open dialogue box normally opens to the user file, but we can navigate to other locations on the hard drive or other storage devices.
Let’s open the first chapter of the Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum.
The author’s name starts with “B”.
Notice that not all of the Kurzweil features are available when documents are created in this way. For files not on the supported list, choose File -> Import. And Kurzweil will Auto-Detect the correct format for that file.
You can also extract text from any open file.
Let’s maximize this Word file to see how that works.
To extract all of the text into Kurzweil press Control-Alt-R, and to extract only the selected text press Control-Shift-R.
This document was only two pages so let’s convert the entire document by pressing Control-Alt-R. And, there’s the text in Kurzweil. Again, not all of the study features are available.
We’ll start this demonstration with Kurzweil closed.
To convert an entire document into KESI format, open the document and then choose KESI Virtual Printer in the Print dialogue box.
Kurzweil will launch automatically, if it isn’t already open, and the document will be created in Kurzweil. Any doc created in this manner will have all of the study and notes tools available.
Just remember to switch the printer back when you are finished. Otherwise you
will be puzzled when you try to print a document and Kurzweil launches instead.
This concludes Section 8.
