Instructional Evaluation - Discussion List
When Kurzweil processes a scanned page it divides the text into blocks called zones according to the way the page is laid out. You can edit the zones if necessary by choosing Tools -> Zone Editor.
When you are on the whole page, the zones will be numbered in their reading order, and they will be yellow in color. There are currently seven zones on this page.
Once you are in the Zone Editor, right clicking on the page brings up the zone editor menu. On the whole page you have the option of zooming in on a portion of the page or adding a zone.
I particularly like the way this textbook was written because it provides the definitions of bold faced words out to the left in side bar. Kurzweil actually scanned this page perfectly, but for the sake of this example, we’ll pretend it missed this sidebar, and we need to redraw it.
When you choose Add Zone, a crosshair appears. Just position the crosshair to the left, hold down the mouse button and drag over the text.
When you double click, the new zone is created. In this case it will be zone number 8.
You also may edit an individual zone. Select the zone by clicking on it.
When the zone turns red to show that it has been selected, click the right-mouse button to bring up the zone editor menu.
To make the zone larger or smaller choose Adjust Zone. You can also zoom in on a portion of the zone.
To delete the zone, choose Delete Zone.
To reorder the zone, choose Properties and type the new reading order in the box.
Let’s have this read third.
In the Properties box you can also designate a zone as Primary or Secondary text or as a Graphic.
Primary text is the text Kurzweil normally reads.
Secondary text will be ignored by Kurzweil unless you choose to read it by clicking on it specifically.
When you are finished editing the zone, click OK
To return to the main document, you must turn off the Zone Editor by choosing
Tools and Zone Editor.
