To set the scanning options, choose Tools -> Options, and click the Scanning tab.
You can set the scanning brightness by typing a value in this box or by using the slider bar.
The arrow keys will take you up in increments of 5 and the page up and down keys will take you up and down in increments of 10.
At any time you can use the Default button to reset this bar.
Lower levels in this box will produce darker results, and higher levels will produce lighter results.
You can also set the delay for repeated scanning with this slider bar. This specifies the interval for automatic scanning, usually a comfortable amount of time for you to position a new page properly.
From the OCR Engine menu, you can choose one of two OCR applications. If you don’t like the scan results with one, you can experiment to see whether the other produces a better result.
From the OCR language menu you can choose a language for recognition of the
scanned document.
For example, if the document you are scanning is in French, choose French here
and in your Reading tab.
The Page Orientation menu lets you select the page orientation. If you leave it set on Auto Rotate, Kurzweil will automatically orient it for you. Choosing Rotate 180 may save a little scanning time.
The Extra section helps you fine tune your scanning.
Find Columns allows Kurzweil to find columns of text on a page instead of reading the words straight across. It’s probably best to leave this box checked, although you might want to uncheck it for certain kinds of tables.
Show New Scans allows you to look at the page you’ve just scanned which has been added to the end of the document. It’s best to leave this on so you can catch errors quickly.
Use White on Black for recognizing light text on a dark background.
Despeckle is useful for recognizing text printed on newsprint or other textured or dotted paper.
Dynamic Thresholding breaks each page into sections and applies a different thresholding level to each section. This is useful for pages with a complicated layout or when several colors or styles of text are being used.
When you have made your changes, click Apply and OK.
This concludes Section 5c.
