Section 10: Using Kurzweil Reference Tools

The reference tools are located on the Main Toolbar.

They include:
• the Definition tool
• the Synonym tool
• the Syllables tool, and
• the Spell tool.

To find the definition of a word, select the word, or a portion of it, and click the Definition button.

We are currently working in a text format document. In a KESI format document we would not be able to select a portion of a word. In that case, use Reference  Look Up Word I Type and just type the word in the box.

The current definition is from the American Heritage Dictionary, 3rd edition, and probably contains too much information for a younger student.

To change the dictionary, choose Reference -> Select Dictionary and the American Heritage Children’s Dictionary. You might find that more suitable for younger students.

To find the synonyms for a word, highlight the word and click the Synonym button.

There are three dictionary definitions for the word “curious”, and synonyms are provided for each definition.

The Definition tool works within the synonym box.

To see and hear the syllables within a word, highlight the word and click on the Syllables button

To hear the word spelled, select the word and click on the Spell tool.

This concludes Section 10.
