Introduction
Emphasis in this module will be placed on physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT). Decisions regarding the need for PT/OT services, and agreement on the frequency, duration, and service delivery model are oftentimes sticking points for the IEP team.
 
Module Description
This module is largely written is a question and answer format. Every one of the questions has really been asked at one time or another.
 
Instructional Outcomes
Upon completion of this module the user will be able to:
  • State the role of related services relevant to the Individualized Education Plan (IEP);
     
  • Describe how decisions are made regarding whether physical therapy or occupational therapy services may be needed ; and,
     
  • Identify factors that influence the service level and frequency of services provided.

Instructional Events
  1. Read the narrative that follows.
     
  2. View the vignettes; follow the activity links.
     
  3. Complete the activities listed under “Instructional Evaluation”.
     
Instructional Evaluation
  • Perform chart reviews on 3 students currently receiving special education services, and specifically the related services of physical therapy and/or occupational therapy.  Determine if, based on information available in the IEP, you could objectively discuss the following with a parent/guardian:  the related service(s) being provided, the frequency of service, the level of service, the duration of services, and the educational goals related to that service. Seek answers to any questions you have. Write a brief summary of your findings for each case.
     
  • Write a defensible response to each concern expressed in the vignettes.
     
  • Follow and explore the activity links. Document your findings.
