MODULE DESCRIPTION:

This module will provide information regarding related services as identified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 and as described in the proposed Special Education Rules, Title 511, Article 7, published by the Indiana Department of Education Division of Exceptional Learners, in February, 2008. Emphasis in this module will be placed on two of the more frequently requested related services: physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT). The module reader will consider the decision making process for determining the need for related services, the appropriate level of service, and the service delivery model.

Instructional Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module the user will be able to:

  • State the role of related services relevant to the Individualized Education Plan (IEP);
  • Describe how decisions are made regarding whether physical therapy or occupational therapy services may be needed ; and,
  • Identify factors that influence the service level and frequency of services provided.
