Module ID# 52
Type: autism
Revised: 07/2007

Module Description - Instructional Outcomes - Instructional Events
Instructional Evaluation - Discussion List

MODULE DESCRIPTION:

This module discusses the use of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) as a technology to address the behavioral excesses and deficits experienced by students on the autism spectrum, and to focus on teaching alternative skills using a systematic approach. This module provides information about some components of Applied Behavioral Analysis, including task analysis, prompting, reinforcement, and documentation.

INSTRUCTIONAL OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of the module, users will understand techniques associated with ABA. In addition, users will be able to break a task down into discrete skills. Users will be able to use appropriate prompts and reinforcement with students as well as gather data necessary to document success of the methodology.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROFICIENCIES:

IPSB Standard # 2. The educator of students with exceptional needs understands the developmental nature of learning and collaboratively implements multiple approaches and strategies to provide a variety of activities and opportunities to facilitate student success.
Performance 1. Uses knowledge of how children develop and learn to provide opportunities that support the physical, social, emotional, communicative and cognitive development of all children.

Performance 2. Identifies and designs instructional experiences appropriate for student’s stages of development, learning styles, strengths, and needs.
IPSB Standard # 6. The educator of students with exceptional needs understands the developmental nature of learning and collaboratively implements multiple approaches and strategies to provide a variety of activities and opportunities to facilitate student success.
Performance 1. Adapts and implements strategies and curriculum to meet the unique needs of students.

Performance 3. Selects and applies appropriate best practices to meet the instructional needs of individual students.

Performance 5. Engages students in activities which encourages positive social interaction and self-motivation, and provides choices in learning.

INSTRUCTIONAL EVENTS:

  1. Study the narrative section of the module. Visit websites and references to gather additional information.
  2. Using the information in the case studies (Matthew & Sara), identify a behavior to target for decreasing and an alternative prosocial behavior for teaching. Create a case study using an individual with whom you work.
  3. Develop a task analysis for one of the individuals in the case studies (Matthew & Sara).
  4. Using the task analysis developed above, identify strategies for teaching an entire task.
  5. Add a system of reinforcement and reinforcement schedule.
  6. To the above task analysis, add data collection procedures and highlight a plan for generalization.
